Tipping guides
Short, plain-English guides to Flipping tips and reading a tipster's record.
How Flips work
A Flip costs $1 and shows you a tip's selection, the price and the tipster's analysis. You only spend it when the tip pays.
The Flip rule
A Flip is only ever spent on a tip that pays: $2 or more profit on $10 (multis: every leg). Singles: your Flip is returned to your balance unless a notional $10 bet at the price shown when you Flip makes $2 or more profit. Multis: your Flips are returned to your balance unless every leg comes off.
| A single, on a $10 bet | Your Flip | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Comes off, $3.00 when you FlippedReturns $30.00 · profit +$20.00 | $30.00 | +$20.00 | Profitable |
| Comes off, $1.20 when you FlippedReturns $12.00 · profit +$2.00 | $12.00 | +$2.00 | Profitable |
| Made $1.50 on $10: under the $2 needed, so your Flip was returned.Returns $11.50 · profit +$1.50 | $11.50 | +$1.50 | Flip returned |
| Doesn't come offReturns $0.00 · profit −$10.00 | $0.00 | −$10.00 | Flip returned |
- The price is locked
- The price shown when you Flip is the one the rule uses, even if the price moves afterwards.
- Kinds of Flips
- Welcome (5 when you verify your email), Referral (when a friend you invited makes their first purchase), Gift (from TIPR), Prize (from TIPR competitions) and Purchased. They're spent in that order.
- Buying Flips
- From the Flips button in the header or My Flips. Payment is taken securely by Stripe. TIPR never sees your card number.
- The tipster
- Earns $0.25 for each Flip of a tip that pays (one that makes $2 or more profit on $10), paid via Stripe once earnings reach $10.
Reading a tipster's record
Every tip card carries the tipster's record. Prices and results come from our data feeds, and tipsters can't enter or change them.
- Last 10
- Last 10: ✓ profitable · ✗ not. The line steps up for each profitable tip and down for each one that wasn't.
- Profitable
- Profitable means the tip made money — any profit above $0. Break-even is not profitable.
- TIPR rating
- Top 10%, Top 25%, Top 50%, Lower half or Bottom 25% against other tipsters on their all-time TIPR rating (how often their racing tips won compared with what the prices said was likely), among tipsters with 30 or more settled tips. "New" means fewer than 30 settled tips. Unrated means 30 or more settled tips and no rating yet.
- 30-day profit
- Profit or loss over the last 30 days on a $10 unit.
- Strike rate
- The share of settled tips that were profitable.
- ROI
- Profit or loss on a $10 unit divided by total staked.
- Races like this
- How the tipster has gone in races that share factors with this one, such as race distance, track rating or field size.
- Marks
- Top pick, Tip of the day and Roughie of the day. A Tip of the day is always a Top pick. A tipster can name one Tip of the day and one Roughie of the day each race day.
- Multi record
- Multis tipped, multis where every leg came in, share of legs that came in, and ROI.
How ratings work
TIPR rating measures how often a tipster's settled racing tips have won compared with what the prices said was likely, adjusted so small records aren't over-rated. It uses their whole record and is updated automatically every night. Tiers compare tipsters who have 30 or more settled tips: Bottom 25% means their rating is in the lowest quarter. It isn't the same as ROI or profit. Past results don't mean future tips will be profitable. Think a result is wrong? Contact support@tipr.bet.
What to look for
- Plenty of settled tips tells you more than one hot week.
- ROI tells you more than strike rate: a tipster backing longer prices can be profitable with a lower strike rate.
- Check what they tip: a strong harness record says little about AFL.
- Past results don't guarantee future results.
Units and collect
Your unit size is what you'd put on a whole tip. It starts at $10; change it any time in Settings. Collect is what that unit would return if the tip comes off. TIPR doesn't take bets: you place any bet yourself, with your own bookmaker.
| Your unit $20 | Collect | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Single bet: Win$20.00 at $3.50 | $20.00 | $3.50 | $70.00 |
| Cover bet: Win on #4 (60%)$12.00 at $4.00 | $12.00 | $4.00 | $48.00 |
| Cover bet: Place on #7 (40%)$8.00 at $1.80 | $8.00 | $1.80 | $14.40 |
Before you Flip you see a collect range instead of the exact figure, so the price stays hidden. Prices fall into four bands (under $2, $2 to $4, $4 to $8, $8 or more), times your unit.
After you Flip you see the exact collect at the price when you Flipped. Tipster stats always use a $10 unit, so every tipster is compared the same way.
Multis
A multi joins 3 to 5 racing legs. It costs 1 to 6 Flips, set from the legs' prices when you Flip. You spend your Flips only if every leg comes off; if any leg misses, every Flip is returned to your balance.
- Before you Flip
- The number of legs, the Flip price, a price band, the tipster's multi record and when it starts. The legs stay hidden.
- After you Flip
- Every leg, with a tick or cross as each one settles.
- Flipping closes
- 1 minute per leg before the first leg starts (5 minutes for a 5-leg multi).
- Scratchings
- If a leg is scratched or void, the multi settles on the remaining legs. If fewer than 3 legs remain, or the combined price of the remaining legs falls below the minimum multi price, the multi is void and your Flips are returned to your balance.
- Who tips them
- Any tipster, racing only.
Cut-offs, scratchings and refunds
Start times on TIPR are shown in your own time zone.
- Flipping closes
- 1 minute before the start for a single or cover tip; for a multi, 1 minute per leg before the first leg.
- Tipsters' cut-off
- 3 minutes before the start for a single or cover tip; for a multi, 2 minutes before Flipping closes. Editing and deleting a tip stop once anyone has Flipped it.
- Scratched single
- The tip is void and your Flip is returned to your balance.
- Scratched in a cover
- That runner's share is void and the tip settles on the other runners.
- Abandoned race
- A single is void and your Flip is returned to your balance. A multi settles on its remaining legs. If that leaves fewer than the minimum number of legs, or the remaining legs' combined price falls below the minimum multi price, the multi is void and your Flips are returned to your balance.
- Final results only
- Nothing settles on an interim result or during a protest. Dead heats share the return in the usual way.
